- Elena's Educational Journey: Health Challenges and Sponsorship Opportunity
Phil Kirchner from the United States visited Vida Guatemala NGO for the first time in February. His visit was quite brief, following a breakfast meeting with one of the Board members in the United States. Phil was taking Spanish classes in Antigua, Guatemala, where he could only manage a quick afternoon tour. He shared that he was impressed by what he saw and the work being done to support children with disabilities. This experience motivated him to learn more about Vida Guatemala NGO and to commit to sponsoring Elena. In July of 2024, while Phil was volunteering in Guatemala he was able to meet Elena for the first time he looks forward to to spending more time with Elena on future trips to Guatemala and perhaps volunteering at the Sindrome de Amor School. An Uncertain Beginning The information provided is based on a conversation with Clemencia Ramírez, Elena’s mother. From the day Elena was born, she has faced health challenges. Although she has not received a clear diagnosis due to financial limitations, both her pediatrician and her family recognize the need for specialized care. So far, the only diagnosis she has received is attention deficit disorder, but it is suspected that her difficulties may be deeper and more complex. The lack of resources has prevented a thorough evaluation. However, what is evident is her astonishing ability to speak, which her parents consider a genuine miracle. A Ray of Hope With the support of her speech therapist, Elena joined the Escuela Síndrome de Amor, a place where she has found an environment of understanding and support. Although her parents were initially worried about her ability to participate in school activities, Elena has shown remarkable progress and interacts like any other child her age. Despite this, she faces daily challenges, such as fluctuating energy levels, which can sometimes be overwhelming for her classmates. Seeking Support Due to the lack of access to specialized medical services, Elena and her family have decided not to delve deeper into her condition. However, her oral health requires urgent attention, which has been difficult to obtain due to economic problems. Along this journey, the school and municipal support have been fundamental pillars for her development, providing her with an inclusive environment where she feels motivated and supported by her teachers. The Need for Diagnosis and Resources for Elena To continue supporting Elena on her path to growth and success, it is crucial to obtain a complete medical diagnosis and resources to meet her personal needs, such as clothing and other essential items. With the right support, Elena has the potential to continue thriving and achieve her educational and personal goals. Inspiration for All Elena’s story is an inspiration to all of us, reminding us that love and determination can overcome any obstacle. Together, we can help build a brighter future for her and for all the children facing similar challenges. - Blanca Ramos's Work: A Story of Dedication and Commitment to the Sindrome de Amor School
At the heart of our Sindrome de Amor School, where we dedicate ourselves to educating children with disabilities and from low-income backgrounds in Guatemala, stands an exemplary figure who embodies the spirit of commitment and dedication: teacher Blanca. Empowering Through Language At 33 years old, Blanca has devoted her life to teaching English, a task beyond imparting linguistic knowledge. Her passion for sports intertwines with her educational vocation, offering her students not only the tools to communicate in another language but also a model of an active and healthy lifestyle. Practical Language Learning with Confidence One of Blanca's main focuses is to teach English classes with a practical methodology, encouraging constant use of the language in everyday activities. This approach not only facilitates grammar learning but also provides children with the confidence to communicate in a second language. Dedication Beyond the Classroom The scope of her work is impressive: Blanca directly impacts the education of the 130 students at the school. This number highlights the importance and reach of her work, as well as the challenge of meeting the needs of such a diverse and vulnerable group. The Sindrome de Amor School constantly needs more resources and access to specialized training. However, Blanca's and her colleagues' commitment and dedication have fostered outstanding performance that distinguishes them in the Guatemalan educational landscape. The teacher participated in the International Congress "Preserving Innocence, Pursuing Crime" in Guatemala, where she actively collaborated with other key actors from various institutions. Her goal was to promote the protection of children and adolescents against abuse, sexual exploitation, and crime in defense of childhood. Gratitude for a Legacy We are deeply grateful for her dedication and ongoing support. With them, we can fulfill our essential mission of providing education and opportunities to children in great need. Teacher Blanca's legacy will endure as an example of dedication and love for teaching in the school's history. Donate The school has attracted volunteers willing to support teachers like Blanca through sponsorship. Recognizing their crucial role in education, these volunteers are committed to contributing to teachers' professional and personal development. Participation in this initiative is encouraged to finance training and enhance the educational quality for children.
- Sweet Collaboration: A Fundraiser That Leaves a Lasting Taste of Goodness
In the spirit of giving and community of the last month of the year 2023, Tanja Wittrock and Mimi Wheeler, dedicated board members of Vida Guatemala NGO, joined forces with their friend Candace Fries and the owners of Grocer's Daughter Chocolate in Empire, Michigan, to organize the second annual fundraiser for their cherished little school and community. The event, held on December 9, was a delightful blend of philanthropy, delectable treats, and cultural appreciation. Jody and DC Hayden, the owners of Grocer's Daughter Chocolate, made significant contributions to the cause, setting the stage for a successful fundraiser. The event's highlight was the sale of intricately crafted clay birds from the vibrant Antigua area. These charming ornaments, purchased during a visit to Antigua Guatemala, in February 2023, became a symbol of support for the Sindrome de Amor School and the broader Vida community. The support of the local community further enriched the collaboration between the board members and the chocolate shop owners. A women-owned shop near the iconic Santa Catalina Arch on 5th Avenue North in Antigua enthusiastically embraced the initiative, contributing to the acquisition of the clay birds and reinforcing the idea of supporting Vida Guatema NGO. The fundraiser was not just about raising funds; it celebrated generosity and shared values. The hosts, Tanja Wittrock and Mimi Wheeler curated an elegant spread of appetizers, fine wines, and other refreshments. Attendees were treated to the exquisite taste of high-quality Ecuadorean chocolate, adding a touch of luxury to the evening. A musical duet played in the gelateria next door, enhancing the overall ambiance and making it an unforgettable experience. Guests and shoppers had the opportunity to learn more about the Sindrome de Amor School and its mission. As they browsed through the assortment of chocolates, they also discovered the significance of the hand-crafted and painted clay birds, which were available for purchase to adorn holiday trees or to be gifted to friends. As the event concluded, the organizers extended a heartfelt call to action. The mission of Vida Guatemala NGO, to eradicate poverty and transform lives through high-quality, inclusive education for children of all abilities in San Miguel Dueñas, Guatemala, continues to rely on the support of generous individuals. - Sharing Joy and Raising Funds: The Vida Guatemala NGO Clothing Swap Event
In the heart of Northern Michigan's picturesque lake country, a group of women came together to make a difference in the lives of students at Vida Guatemala NGO. Led by board members Mimi Wheeler and accompanied by Tanja Wittrock, Mimi organized a Women's Clothing Swap event that not only helped raise funds for Síndrome de Amor School but also brought the community closer through the joy of sharing. In this blog post, we'll take you through the journey of this heartwarming event and the impact it had on both the participants and the students of Vida. The Idea Takes Root Mimi Wheeler, a board member of Vida Guatemala NGO, may not consider herself a "fashionista," but she does believe in the power of community and giving back. When a friend expressed her desire to clean out her closet, Mimi had a brilliant idea – why not organize a clothing swap to raise money for Vida Guatemala NGO? The friend, a generous supporter of Vida, was on board, and soon, several other women joined in with clothes to donate and a willingness to help make the event a success. The Setting Set against the backdrop of Northern Michigan's stunning lake country, the event was scheduled for Labor Day, September 4th, from 3-6 pm. A serene park provided the perfect location, with towering pine trees serving as natural clotheslines, and tables were set up for neatly folded sweaters, pants, and skirts. The ambiance was welcoming, and the purpose was clear – to raise funds for Vida Guatemala NGO. Spreading the Word Mimi's determination to make the event a success was evident in her outreach efforts. She posted about the event on three different Facebook groups and sent emails to around 30 of her women friends. The response was overwhelming, and on the day of the event, an estimated 50-60 women gathered at the park, each with clothes or shoes to donate. A Day of Laughter and Giving The Women's Clothing Swap event was not just about swapping clothes; it was a day filled with laughter, encouragement, and camaraderie. Women cheered each other on as they tried on different outfits, and the joy of finding "new" clothing items at a great price was infectious. Even a few brave men stopped by and left with trendy shoes for their loved ones. Success Beyond Expectations The event's success was beyond expectations. Thanks to the generous donations of clothes and the suggested entrance fee of $10, the event raised between $1,000 and $1,500 for Vida, Guatemala. Two board members of Vida were actively involved in the event, and many attendees had previously supported the school. It was a heartwarming display of solidarity. A Bright Future Encouraged by their success, the organizers have declared their intention to repeat the event next year, likely at the same time. They plan to expand their advertising efforts and be better prepared to handle a larger volume of clothing donations. As for the donated clothing that didn't find a new home, it was not wasted. The organizers brought 10-12 bags and boxes to a resale store, with the proceeds going to fight poverty in the area. The Women's Clothing Swap event organized by Mimi Wheeler, accompanied by Tanja Wittrock and her friends not only raised crucial funds for Vida Guatemala NGO, but it also created a delightful afternoon filled with fun and community spirit. It served as a reminder of the joy of sharing and the impact that small acts of generosity can have in a world with dwindling resources. Through this event, many women found "new" clothing treasures, and Vida Guatemala NGO continues to thrive and make a difference in the lives of students. As Mimi aptly puts it, the concept of a clothing swap is worth sharing, and she welcomes anyone with questions about her experience to reach out. In this way, the spirit of giving and sharing can continue to grow and spread, making the world a better place one event at a time. Rebecca Robinson, a prominent figure on our Board of Directors in the USA, plays a pivotal role in shaping our organization's strategic direction and ensuring that our initiatives seamlessly align with our core values. Her robust leadership skills, combined with a profound comprehension of our organizational goals, empower us to effect a lasting, positive difference in the lives of those we are dedicated to serving. These initiatives are being diligently advanced by the dedicated volunteers we've been fortunate to receive from numerous countries, including recent contributions from Italy, Spain, New Zealand, and the USA. Rebecca shared her reflections on her visit, stating, "Experiencing VIDA in person was truly inspiring. From the moment I stepped into the facility, it was abundantly clear that each student absolutely adores attending school. I had the honor of observing multiple classes in session. In one instance, students eagerly approached me, showcasing their English notebooks and practicing questions and phrases in English." During her visit, she also witnessed Oliver, one of the Founders of Vida Guatemala NGO, expertly teaching algebra with a gentle, organized, and thoughtful approach that left a profound impression. Every student was fully engaged, displaying both a deep respect for their peers and a genuine appreciation for their learning environment. Embracing Inclusive Education Rebecca was elated to witness the harmonious interaction among all the children. She noted, "Perhaps the most heartwarming experience was observing students of all ages playing together during their break. The sight of younger and older children exploring, laughing, and enjoying each other's company was truly heartening." índrome de Amor School's Core Values In the learning space, every time an adult entered, several students warmly greeted them with affection. - 🌟 Jhonatan Xulú's Struggle: From Overcoming to Hope, How an Impactful Story Changed His Life 🌟
Through the testimony of María Concepción Reyes, we learn the story of her son Jhonatan, who has shown determination and resilience in his development. Jhonatan, a child full of energy and enthusiasm who suffers from a walking disability and cerebral palsy, has found his greatest motivation in education. His mother has always been by his side, supporting him every step of his educational journey. Desire for Access to Education Despite the challenges they have faced as a family, María Concepción and Jhonatan have never given up. Their goal has always been to create a better future for their son, and to achieve this, María wanted to find a place where her son could receive the necessary support for his education. They were also looking for an environment that promoted inclusive education and connected them with other organizations to obtain more benefits, such as improving his mobility. They also hoped to find better educational tools that would allow him to communicate more effectively, which was their greatest concern. However, economic difficulties have been an obstacle in Jhonatan's path. Inclusion in Inclusive Education Since he arrived at the Sindrome de Amor School in San Miguel Dueñas, Guatemala, a place that values and supports children with disabilities, his life has completely changed. This school has become a refuge for him, a place where he feels accepted and understood. Thanks to the flexible plan implemented in the school, he has had the opportunity to receive education tailored to his needs and abilities. The Impact of Flexible Education The impact of this flexible plan on Jhonatan's education has been remarkable for both him and his family. As he has participated in virtual classes, he has developed new communication and expression skills. Previously, he mainly communicated through audio, but now he is learning to write and express his ideas more clearly, which his family is witnessing. Jhonatan has found an invaluable tool for his learning and academic development in technology, especially in his tablet. Overcoming Barriers Jhonatan's story goes beyond his search for inclusive education. In addition to being an avid student, Jonathan has shown a passion for sports by practicing Boccia at the Paralympic level. His dedication and tireless effort have earned him recognition and admiration, winning numerous medals in local and national competitions. His sporting achievements have not only enriched his life but have also allowed him to proudly represent his community of San Miguel Dueñas and his country at high-level events, including competing in the city of Xela in the department of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. He embodies strength and determination, inspiring others to follow their dreams and reach new heights, regardless of the limitations they may face. Challenges Faced by Jhonatan Despite his outstanding achievements, Jonathan has faced challenges due to the deteriorated condition of his wheelchair, which has affected his full participation in daily activities. This physical limitation has hindered his mobility and generated difficulties for his independence. However, with determination and the support of his community, he seeks to overcome these obstacles and access an appropriate wheelchair that will allow him to navigate his daily life with greater comfort and autonomy. Jonathan's story teaches us that with the right support and necessary determination, any obstacle can be overcome. Jonathan is an example of courage and perseverance, demonstrating that disability does not define a person and that everyone deserves access to inclusive and quality education. Through his story, we hope to raise awareness about the needs of people with disabilities and foster a more inclusive and supportive world.
- My Life-Changing Experience with Vida Guatemala NGO
In 2013, I had the opportunity to be a part of a life-changing journey to Vida Guatemala NGO. This remarkable organization not only shaped my perspective on volunteerism but also left an indelible impression that continues to inspire my commitment to giving back. Join me as I recount the memorable events of my first visit to Vida Guatemala NGO and the profound impact it had on my life. Discovering Vida Guatemala NGO I was working with an international education organization that supported a variety of volunteer projects. It all began when a fellow Volunteer Coordinator introduced me to Oliver, one of the founders of Vida Guatemala NGO. Drawn to the organization's mission and transformative work in Guatemala, our organization decided to send volunteers to support the Síndrome de Amor School created by Vida Guatemala NGO. Choosing to be Part of the NGO We decided to be part of the NGO due to its special methodology in assessing individual needs and strengths of their students. Additionally, we were aware of the limited resources available for special needs children in the public education system of Guatemala. Our admiration for the leadership and teaching at Vida Guatemala fueled our desire to support them in every way we could. Role and Experience As a Volunteer Coordinator, my role involved bringing volunteers to assist at the NGO. The experience was truly life-changing. Working closely with the students, both inside and outside the classroom, I felt a deep sense of purpose and impact with each visit. The warm welcome and the connections formed with the students and staff made this experience unforgettable. Community Spirit at Vida Guatemala NGO One aspect that stood out the most was the sense of community fostered by Vida Guatemala NGO. The founders, Daniel and Oliver, had already established themselves as active members of their own community, and they successfully created a nurturing environment within the school. Every person felt valued for who they were, and this sense of belonging was truly inspiring. The Evolution of Vida Guatemala NGO Over the years, I witnessed the evolution of Vida Guatemala NGO. The school expanded from its initial location to a new building, providing better facilities for the students. Returning after a few years, I was overwhelmed with joy to see the healthy growth and development of the students. Despite the physical changes, the real beauty of the organization lies in the dedication of the teachers, children, and founders Daniel & Oliver who make the space what it is! I felt at home from my first foot step into their first house, and I always feel like it is home when I go back! Continued Support for Vida's Mission As a family, we have continued to support Vida Guatemala NGO by visiting the school and volunteering our time. Additionally, since starting our own business, we have used it as a platform to give back. We are currently leading a fundraising campaign and organizing a service learning experiential trip to Vida Guatemala on February 4-10, 2024. A portion of each person’s payment will be donated directly to Vida Guatemala. This is also part of the bigger plan to continue building the Vida community and support! The more people are getting involved, the better it will be for everyone involved! Challenges and Solutions One of the main challenges faced by Vida Guatemala NGO is funding. As a privately owned non-profit organization, they rely solely on donations to sustain their operations. To overcome this, they need consistent donors who are willing to contribute their time and money. By raising awareness and encouraging more individuals to support their cause, Vida Guatemala NGO can make a significant impact. The median salary in the U.S.A. is $60,000 – which is near their budget for the whole year! If 100 people donated $1000 throughout all of Vida Guatemala NGO’s efforts, they would have over $100,000 and could do so much more! How to Support Vida Guatemala NGO 1. Fundraising campaign Please join us in supporting this amazing organization! Over 120 children & families directly benefit from your donation! All donations can be written off your taxes in the U.S., and the donations will be transferred directly from our GoFundMe fundraising campaign directly to the Vida Guatemala NGO. 2. We will be volunteering at Vida in the morning and immersing ourselves in both cultural & adventurous activities! Would you like to roast a marshmallow on top of a volcano? - The inspiring story of Cristian and the power of inclusion at the Colegio Síndrome de Amor
Noemí and Mario, parents of two children, faced numerous challenges in their search for inclusive education for their son, Cristian Pacheco. At 10 years old, Cristian lives with psychomotor delay and visual impairment, facing limitations in his vision. However, this family persevered and found hope at Colegio Síndrome de Amor, a school supported by the NGO Vida Guatemala. The journey towards inclusion was not easy. During Noemí's pregnancy, an accident led to a premature birth of Cristian at six months of gestation. He spent 45 days in an incubator, struggling to breathe on his own with the aid of an air tube. It was then they discovered he had a detached retina. As Cristian grew, they faced the difficulty of finding schools willing to accommodate him. Noemí and Mario felt the pain and frustration of repeated rejections. The fight for inclusion became exhausting, but they never lost hope. The challenge for education Inclusion in schools has been a challenge for Cristian, as they encountered difficulties in finding a school willing to accept him. Even if they left him at an educational institution for just half a day, Noemí would wait outside because they always told her they would call if anything happened. Mario, a firefighter, mentions that, just like in his work where they are trained to handle distressing situations and communicate with people through sign language, schools should also be prepared to face similar challenges. How did they get to the Colegio Síndrome of the NGO Amor de Vida Guatemala? In their search for an educational environment that would fully accept and support their son, Noemí decided to share their story on social media. It was through this brave action that they discovered Colegio Síndrome de Amor, supported by the NGO Vida Guatemala. An encounter that would change their lives forever. Colegio Síndrome de Amor became the beacon of hope that the family needed. Here, they not only found quality education but also a space where love, inclusion, and acceptance were fundamental pillars. Noemí and Mario describe how the school has taught them to view disability as something normal, cultivating love for others and self-love. In this comprehensive environment, children learn everything from academic skills to cultivating fruits and vegetables, and cooking. What stands out from the school? Today, two of Noemí and Mario's children study at Colegio Síndrome de Amor. The joy of seeing Cristian in an inclusive environment, where all their children can coexist without barriers, is an immense achievement. They have overcome their fears and built complete trust in the institution and in Cristian's future. The story of Cristian and his family is an inspiring testament to the importance of inclusion and the positive impact it can have on a person's life. They teach us that, despite obstacles, love and determination can open doors and change destinies.
